The history of the Bashkir oil is reviewed – from the first prospecting and exploration activities in the areas with oil seeps to drilling discovery wells near Ishimbay, which struck commercial oil accumulations, and later on to discovering oil in the Devonian sandstones on the giant Tuymazinskoe field and in the Lower Carboniferous sandstones of the giant Arlanskoe field. The consecutive discoveries contributed to the present-day hydrocarbon resource base of Bashkortostan, which secures a high level of economic maturity in the Republic.
