Hydrofracturing of low-pressure reservoirs

Marginal wells producing fr om carbonate formations need to be stimulated, but the lim iting factor for carbonates fracturing is their low reservoir pressure. In this case it will be useful to consider fracture geometry developed under low pressure conditions, and also to evaluate frac-job feasibility and economic efficiency. It has been shown that mechanical barriers restricting fracture height growth can be hydraulically developed through reservoir pressure depletion. This method results in development of longer but height-restrained fractures, which prevents penetration of water horizons and early water breakthrough after frac-job. This paper demonstrates that some reduction of fracturing cost can make this method economically attractive for low-pressure carbonate formations.
